Songwriters have legal protections of their songs; authors have protections of their works–so why don’t fashion designers have protections of their works?
If the Senate Judiciary Committee’s unanimous vote for the Innovative Design Protection and Piracy Prohibition Act is any indication, U.S. fashion designers will soon have similar legal protections for their designs. Copyright infringement suits aren’t rare in the fashion world; however, victories, such as this one for Forever 21, are very rare.
The act, also known as the fashion design protection bill, hasn’t been without opposition, although some are very supportive of it, as demonstrated in this New York Times column.
